At
least one supplier offers a 'Buy One Get One Free' offer, but the
print prices are considerably higher to start with, and vat at 17.5% is
added. Art Origination does not charge vat so prices are lower, in some
cases by as much as 25%!
Prices for Fine Art Photography & Giclee printing compared.
Unless
you already have a suitable digital image it is usually impractical to
use a remote supplier because of the problems and cost of transporting
your art. If you have your own images, I include an example of Giclee
printing prices you may find by search of the Internet for 'Giclee Printing
for Artists'. For the supplier prices shown here I have used the following
example: Photography of one piece art, setup, proof and 5 A2 Museum Grade
Giclee prints. Although I do not offer a scanning service, I have included
scanning charges from other suppliers for comparison if you decided to
have your art scanned.
One
of the other drawbacks of scanning is size limitation. Most scanners are
up to A3/A2 in size. If you art is larger, which a lot of the art I photograph
is, your art will be 'stitched' together, which means scanning your image
in sections and then using software to match and 'stitch' the sections
together. Not the best way for fine reproduction of your art, especially
if you have a large image. This may mean stitching together four or more
sections! .Surprisingly, charges for this
scanning service can be higher than the charge I make for photography
on a high resolution digital camera. Photography of paintings already
framed is no problem. This would not be practical on a flatbed scanner
which can also have problems with oil paintings see
I
have tried to compare 'like for like' services, however some suppliers
offer 'Scanning' of your art, not photography. They use flatbed
scanners, that I am sure you are familiar with. Cheaper to use than Digital
Photography, there is very little set up and you do not need a highly
experienced operator. Scanning can never produce the color depth and subtle
tonal graduations that the high resolution digital camera can produce.
These qualities are vitally important to the discerning artist. I do not
'scan' paintings! Prices are compared from three local suppliers you would
find on a Google search 'Giclee Printing Bristol'.
